Dear

I write to you to renew the call to support the work that we  as NWRG and Children for Gaza are carrying on since, respectively,  2011 to 2012 in Gaza.

It is not charity work or emergency intervention,  but it consists of projects for the development of mother and child health and scientific documentation of the factors that put them at risk, and for their protection.

The projects include studies of the environmental contamination by the weapons used and from the destruction of infrastructure (eg hospital, health care, and civil, such as sewage). We document these effects not only narratively, which luckily others do well, but scientifically .

We also work to develop professional training abroad of public health staff (very difficult because since 2014 the Israelis have denied exit to doctors and nurses which we sponsored), and, above all, we work in Gaza to train health personnel to stabilize their autonomous capacity to monitor and intervene with various approaches in reproductive health.

We realize that this is work that is not “fashionable” and that “touches immediatly the heart,” but it certainly touches the intelligence of those who understand that it is not just dealing with emergency but giving tools and hopes to take care that can contribute to maintain a vital society for Gazawi.

Our work has caused us constantly defamation, boycott and even penal suits.

After the war of 2014, although (and perhaps because) we were the only ones, in  collaboration with the University of Tampere, the Islamic University and Al Aqsa University in Gaza, to produce data that document the contamination of women and newborns by war-remnants metals and since we documented the parallel increase of more than 5 times of premature births (and consequent neonatal deaths, confirmed by  UNWRA) we have found increasing difficulties in “piercing” the indifference of Palestine friends and in getting funds to continue the work.

It must be said that many of these friends, more institutional, and who could afford to support us with research funds, are also under political pressure.

We feel worse than ever now, since the importance of this work and the importance of our continuity is recognized in the medical and hospital environment in Gaza and has generated hopes and desire to continue the improvement in maternity structures and intensive neonatal care.

In the race to ask for funds (I think Christmas will be such a race!), we are shy and a bit inadequate.

Nonetheless, I rewrite and then I will write again because these projects have to continue.

More than that, they also have a best time to be done, in order to obtain results most accurate (scientifically) and credible. E.g. we have to make a further check on the incidence of birth damages between February and April 2018 because  we need to collect the data from women that have not fasted in previous or present Ramadan during pregnancy (Ramandan id the first week of May 2018 and it was in June in 2017); women fasting this could have an impact in their ability to have the baby at term and of proper weight.

We need 8,000 euros for two months and a half for the birth register 2018.

In addition, we still have to analyze the toxic metal contamination of women in 2017 (for lack of funds we have not yet been able to do so). But since we have already shown that it remains high from 2014 to 2016 and that in parallel the incidence of premature children remains high, is necessary to fallow the contamination levels. Contamination analyzes will cost another 6,000 euros.

Knowing the trend of premature births and of infants born too small serves to provide the best care for mothers and the best care possible to save the life of newborns; to know about the persistence of contamination of mothers and infants will serve to develop protection / prevention measures.

In addition, one has to consider that what we learn from Gaza today is likely to be very useful for other countries under military attack and deprived in the Middle East; even more so since accurate studies will not be possible in places where there is extensive and reiterated displacement of the population. And without knowledge and science it is not conceivable to provide people with help.

I therefore ask you to support us so we can continue the work and to do so immediately.

If you can organize an event, if you can circulate our request, send it to all that could be interested, such as  to networks of human rights and of lawyers, doctors, scientists, academics and communicators, associations and others, we will be grateful.

But, please do it today.

NWRG does not have over-head, costs for the association and, to say it openly, when in difficulty and to as much as possible, we even  pay the research expenses from our own personal pockets.

We also take the opportunity to thank those people who have already donated, but unfortunately is not enough!
